Why did God create angels along with man?

God created angels as an integral part of God's creation. They are spiritual beings described as messengers and servants carrying out various tasks in accordance with God's divine order. Angels are believed to possess great power, intelligence, and purity, existing to serve and glorify God.

There is a hierarchy or classification of angels that includes different orders such as Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. Each order is associated with specific roles and responsibilities, ranging from praising God's holiness and executing His justice to guiding and protecting nations, individuals, and the earthly realm.

Angels are present and active in the lives of faithful people, offering guidance, protection, and support. Angels are considered messengers and helpers, conveying divine revelations and guidance to humans. Acting as intermediaries between God and humanity, they bring important messages, provide protection, and offer assistance when needed. At Baptism, each person is assigned a guardian angel who watches over and protects them throughout their lives. These guardian angels intercede on behalf of individuals, offering guidance, comfort, and safeguarding against spiritual dangers.

Angels are also recognized as beings engaged in constant worship and adoration of God. They join with Orthodox Christians in the Divine liturgy as an invitation for humans to join in this celestial worship, fostering a harmonious relationship between the heavenly and earthly realms. When we worship we believe that the heavenly Church joined with the earthly church to glorify God and offer thanks.

Angels play a significant role in the journey of the soul after death. Angels are seen as guides and protectors of the soul as it transitions from earthly life to the eternal realm. It is believed that angels accompany the soul at the moment of death, guiding it towards the heavenly realms. After death, the soul may encounter spiritual struggles and temptations. Angels are believed to provide protection and assistance, guarding the soul against the influence of demonic forces and helping it navigate these challenges. As the soul progresses through the different stages of the afterlife, it is believed that angels play a role in guiding and supporting its ascent towards union with God. They help the soul overcome obstacles, purify itself, and draw closer to the divine presence.

While our understanding of the role of angels is clouded in mystery, it is clear that they are an important integral part of Creation and assist in the perfection of mankind. The angelic realm is intertwined with the lives of of the Orthodox faithful. By nurturing faith, prayer, reverence, virtuous living, and seeking spiritual guidance, individuals can cultivate a heightened awareness of being upheld and guided by angels in their journey of faith, including the journey after death. The creation of angels alongside humanity is part of God's divine plan, serving as messengers, protectors, and participants in worship, guides, contributing to the overall beauty and order of God's creation and man’s salvation.
