How Can Angels Help Us?

In Orthodox Christianity, angels are regarded as spiritual beings created by God to serve and assist humanity. Their presence and assistance are seen throughout the Scriptures, affirmed by the teachings of the Church Fathers. While experiencing an angelic encounter is not the goal of our spiritual life, such encounters, if granted by God, are considered profound and spiritual gifts. Furthermore, angels offer comfort and solace during moments of sorrow, grief, or suffering. They can bring a sense of peace and reassurance, reminding us of God's presence and love. In times of physical affliction, angels are believed to bring healing and restoration, acting as conduits of divine grace.

The Church Fathers, revered for their spiritual insight, have emphasized the assistance of angels. 

St. John Chrysostom spoke of angels as ministers of both God and our salvation, helping us not only in our present life, but also on our path to heaven. St. Basil the Great affirmed that each believer has a guardian angel who serves as a protector and shepherd. St. Gregory the Great described angels as sent by God's mercy to support us in every step of our lives, defending us from temptation and driving away dangers. St. Ambrose of Milan encouraged us to pray for angelic guidance and protection, that we may pass through life without stumbling and enter into eternal happiness.

Angels hold a significant place in Orthodox Christianity, serving as messengers, guardians, intercessors, and protectors. They offer comfort, healing, and guidance on our spiritual journey. While experiencing an angelic encounter is not a goal in itself, it can be a profound manifestation of God's providence. The focus of our spiritual life should always be on growing closer to God, nurturing our faith, worshiping and participation in the sacraments, daily prayer and fasting, and living a life of virtue. If granted an angelic encounter, it should be received with humility, discernment, and gratitude, recognizing it as a gift from God.
