Implanting a Spiritual Vision on our Minds

The task of lifting our normal outlook from one that is based the workings of this world to one that is spiritual and guided by divine economy demands much effort.  Saint Theophan emphasizes that this requires that we engage in this visioning (mentioned in the previous two postings) ceaselessly.  It is a matter of forcing ourselves.  He says,

“From the first minutes of awakening to consciousness, go within and with all possible force place yourself in this paradigm and order.”  At first it is better to focus on parts of it on different days of the week and eventually the entire structure will be there.  The aim is to have the whole paradigm in your mind and consciousness.  He says, “You should remember that it is not just a matter of thinking over something, but a fixed mental vision, or faith in that subject.”

An Aid
To help, you can take verses from Holy Scripture concerning a particular subject of this vision. and repeat it throughout the day.
He gives an example
Where shall I go?  It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (cf. Heb 9:27 ...Treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath… (Rom 2:5). ...There is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12), and so on.

He says what is important is to have a picture of death, the cross or the Last Judgment and to have this vividly in your mind where you will be reminded of it.  Also, reading any articles or books on these subjects are useful.

He advises,
“Remember often God’s invisible and unexpected judgments, fatal accidents, relatives who have died and their condition; picture yourself also on your death bed, and see your funeral.”

Finally,
“Labor, concentration and force will soon bring you to the desired goal; just do not slacken, do not interrupt yourself, but work and work, even though you may not see any fruit or acquire anything.”
